Testing and Inspection
Legislation has placed the responsibility for the regular inspection and testing of lifting equipment with the Ship’s Master. Austin & McLean’s Ships Services Division has recruited many well known shipping companies to its Lifting Equipment Management Service (LEMS).

LEMS handles all the record keeping, manages the testing and inspection routines and we provide the ship with a read-only CD which offers instant access to the history and status of all the lifting equipment aboard.

Specialised compact tooling enables our experienced team of engineers to travel anywhere in the world to join your ship and carry out their testing and inspection with the minimum of disruption.

As an additional safeguard, we provide foolproof, colour coded “Safe To Use” stickers to be placed in prominent positions in areas where equipment is to be used.

Life Saving Appliance Testing
Life saving appliances must be tested in accordance with current regulations.

When testing lifeboats we fill the boat with evenly distributed water bags. Secondary craneage is not required as the bags are remotely filled and emptied, creating savings in both cost and time.

Loading a 120 man lifeboat in this way, testing its ancillary gear and performing both the dynamic and on-load release tests, takes approximately five hours. We can therefore carry out this work when the ship is either at re-fit or in service.

Supply Service
In the event of equipment failure, Austin & McLean can supply new or replacement equipment where and when required.
